What is Borderline
Personality Disorder?
Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a serious mental illness characterized by pervasive instability in moods, inter-personal relationships, self-image, and behavior.

This instability often disrupts family and work life, long-term planning, and the individual's sense of self-identity. While less known than schizophrenia or bipolar disorder (manic-depressive illness), BPD is more common, affecting 2% of adults, mostly young women.

The Connections Place logoThe Connections Place (TCP) is a Manhattan center under the auspices of NEA-BPD that offers a four-month job preparedness program specifically designed to open pathways to vocational opportunities for clients with BPD.

If so, you may qualify for a research study at the University of Mississippi Medical Center on a new group therapy for self-harm. This study is being done to see if teaching women new skills to manage their emotions in healthy ways will help them reduce their self-harm. We are currently seeking participants who meet the following criteria:
  Self-harm within the past year
Currently seeing an individual therapist or case manager

No current diagnosis of bipolar I disorder or schizophrenia
Group therapy will be provided at no cost to study participants and financial compensation is available.

Stigma and Borderline Personality Disorder
NEA-BPD is in the process of developing an information base on borderline personality disorder. The topic we are currently focusing on is the stigma that surrounds the disorder. We would appreciate statements, from whatever source, now and in the past that attest to the stigma. Statements might come from personal encounters, print or TV or web materials. Word limit is 150-250 words. All responses will be used anonymously without names of the contributor. Thank you so much for taking the time to do this.
